Poisonous Denture Cream Lawsuits Continue To Grow

An upswing in the number of denture cream lawsuits is protecting users from zinc poisoning. As the number of lawsuits increased, pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline removed zinc from three of their denture cream products. The removal is lending credence to the product liability lawsuits, which allege that continual denture cream use has led to zinc poisoning in thousands of users.

Common denture products have brand names such as Fixodent and Poligrip. Many denture creams still contain zinc, despite GlaxoSmithKline changing their products. A high amount of denture cream usage can cause zinc toxicity. Zinc toxicity may cause severe neurological damage. A simple blood test can check a person's zinc levels. Denture wearers who experience numbness in the mouth, unusual sensations, or extreme sensitivity should seek medical attention immediately.

A study of four patients by Dr. Sharon P. Nations revealed debilitating neurological damage from denture cream usage. Each of the patients had high test measurements for zinc in their blood. The numbers could only have been caused by excessive exposure to a product with zinc ingredients. While a normal tube of denture cream should be used over three to ten weeks, Dr. Nations' patients went through as many as two tubes per week.

Dr. Nations, who worked for the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, published her study in the medical journal Neurology. Dr. Nations stated that only denture cream was a "plausible explanation" for their neurological difficulties. Researchers later dubbed their affliction "denture cream poisoning".
